On 14-15 June, G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art holds scientific session in honour of Professor Vakhtang Beridze (his 90 anniversary). Presentations will cover Pre-Christian, Medieval and Modern Georgian art. Materials of the session can be seen on our webpage.

Ministry of Culture, Heritage Protection and Sport plans to start restoration and rehabilitation works of the Georgian cultural heritage sites in Tskhinvali district; also planned are archaeological excavations on ancient settlement-sites in Liakhvi gorge. Georgian and Ossetian ethnic groups of the region will be involved in these works, which will considerably improve both state of the sites and social conditions of the local community.

In order to improve museums system in Georgia, Ministry of Culture, Heritage Protection and Sport has initiated museum reform, which will start soon. The reform envisages introduction of the modern management schemes and establishment of a homogeneous management system. This initiative is aimed at elaboration of a coherent museum policy, improvement of the safety conditions of the collections, strengthening of the educational policy in the museum field and rapprochement of the academic and museum activities.

In next few days, a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration will be signed between Georgia and International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). This long-term co-operation envisages introduction of new technologies, restoration methods and international experience in Georgia. In this connection, Mr. N. Vacheishvili, Deputy Minister of Culture, Heritage Protection and Sport, and Mr. K. Trapaidze, Director of Cultural Heritage Department, had visited ICCROM.

Reform is under preparation at the State Academy of Fine Arts. Single Restoration Faculty will be established and turned into one of the main units of the Academy. This will contribute to rising prestige of the heritage protection and rehabilitation activities in the country.

By the end of June, moratorium on mew construction in the Tbilisi Historic District, established by the Decree of the Government of Georgia will expire. Immediately after the expire date of the moratorium, temporary regime of new construction will enter into force, and, in parallel, State Programme for the Rehabilitation of the Tbilisi Historic District will be launched. Government of Georgia will be supported by Council of Europe, ICCROM and the UNESCO bodies in the implementation of the Rehabilitation Programme.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Tbilisi Municipality and Ministry of Culture, Heritage Protection and Sport, restoration works will be carried out on the most endangered houses in the Tbilisi Historic District.

Georgian Cultural Heritage Information Center in
cooperation with ICOMOS Georgia National Committee,
Institute of Georgian Art History, and State Department of
Heritage Protection, organizes an exhibition and
advocacy campaign in the historical part of Tbilisi to reveal
the most inappropriate modern constructions.

Several organizations, working for development
of Georgian cultural heritage, requested to declare a moratorium
on new constructions. Please see the moratorium in Georgian here.

Restoration works on the 11th c. Samtavro monastery are finishing.
Remnants of the Pre-Christian structure and parts of the 4th
c. basilica revealed during the excavations should be considered
as the unique findings. 19th c. floor is removed and replaced
with the one on the level, on which it was arranged in the
11th c. This will fully display initial architectural design
of the great architect.

An expedition to Trialeti and Zurtaketi, important sites
of Kvemo (Lower) Kartli, undertaken by the Cultural Heritage
Information Centre, came to an end. Vast materials on dozens
of Pre-Christian and Christian monuments have been obtained.
New monuments, inscriptions and inventories have been discovered.
The obtained materials are being prepared for the publication
Sakartvelos Megzuri III - Trialeti da Zurtaketi (Georgia's
Companion III - Trialeti and Zurtaketi) by Prof. Dr. Devi
Berdzenishvili and Dr. Nick Vacheishvili.

Conservation works on the frescos of the Dirbi church (Kareli
district) are finished (Team Leader David Gagoshidze, conservation
painter). After the removal of the thick plastering, 14th
and 17th cc. paintings were revealed, 17th c. painted chancel
barrier was also cleaned. Frescos of high artistic value are
an important contribution to the study of the artistic and
historical contacts between Byzantium and Georgia, as well
as to the analysis of the “Paleologan” art in Georgia.

Further to the intention of the Bishop of
newly established Stepantsminda Eparchy, famous monastery
of Trinity in Gergeti might be re-opened for service. The
unique monastic complex (14th c.) located on 2 200 m. above
the sea level is an unparalleled cultural landscape site.
Its rehabilitation demands extremely cautious approach – each
new structure should be erected without the violation of the
site integrity; the issue is under discussion at present.

Restoration works are planned in Gremi city-site (16th c.)
in eastern Georgia. Further to the request of the Art Council
of the Partiarchy of Georgia, a restoration and adaptive reuse
project is being elaborated.

Most significant archaeological findings are underway in
the environs of the Nekresi monastery (4th-7th cc.) in Kvareli
district, eastern Georgia. Pre-Christian and Christian complexes
are being revealed.

Restoration and reconstruction works were held in David Gareji,
Laura (6th-18th cc.) initiated by the Gareji brethren and
financial support of the businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili.
In certain cases, opinions of experts are not unanimous regarding
the fulfilled works.

Georgian Monuments Protection Foundation (businessman B. Ivanishvili)
is about to start rehabilitation and restoration works of
the memorial house-museum of Akaki Tsereteli, the great Georgian
writer and poet. After the project design process is finilised,
intensive works will start on the house erected in 1835 in
Skhvitori and other structures in its environs.

In summer 2004, Swedish organisation "Vittfarne"
is organising a scholarly expedition, which will cross Georgia
and Azerbaijan. The expedition will move in an exact copy of
the Viking boat along the old Silk Road, which crossed the Vikings'
"Serkland" - Azerbaijan via Baku. The expedition is
aimed at obtaining the material and information on who the people
in the past managed to travel by sea so far and to what an extent
voyage of Ingvar den Vittfarne, 9th c. Swedish traveller, to

As is known, greatest archaeological discoveries are being
made on the Dmanisi city-site (Kvemo Kartli, Mashavera river
gorge, some 60 km. from Tbilisi). Unearthed are human bones
dating to 1 800 000 and 1 700 000, which confirm existence of
the lasting settled humans on this territory. At present this
is the oldest site in the entire Eurasia.

In Tsalka, during the construction of a bridge in the 19th
c., Russian soldiers used the stones of an old church-site.
Stones with the10th-11th cc. ornamentation and inscriptions,
mentioning significant historical persons of Georgia, are left
in the piers of the non-functioning and ruined bridge. The site,
turned into a waste-deposit and dilapidated, is gradually covered
with the earth, valuable stones are deteriorating. Local authorities
and Department of Culture make to efforts to provide shelter
and protection to these valuable fragments.

Expedition of the Georgian Cultural Heritage Information Centre
continues its work in Kvemo (Lower) Kartli – Trialeti and Zurtaketi
area. Dozens of Pre-Christian and Christian sites are recorded,
newly discovered inscriptions are deciphered. Obtained material
will be fully reflected in the series of publications “Georgian
Guide”.

Neither the amended legislation, nor the upcoming elections
can hinder the process of illegal construction activities and
mass devastating of the Tbilisi historic quarters, which is
openly and secretly supported by the authorities.
In the centre of the city, in Vera quarter, buildings dating
to the second half of the 19th c. and the 20th c. are being
exceedingly obliterated, urban fabric and its historic scale
is being transformed, buildings reflecting the early stage of
development of Vera and Sololaki quarters are vanishing.

In several days these buildings will vanish, they will be replaced
by the ugly blocks.

Just recently, II issue of "Georgian Antiquities",
a journal of the Georgian Cultural Heritage nformation Centre
and G. Chubinashvili Institute of History of Georgian Art, was
published. The rticles are focused on various aspects of the pre-Christian
and Christian fine arts and architecture. The journal is sold
in Tbilisi book-shops.

In parallel to the construction of Baku-Jeikhan
oil pipeline, archaeological excavations are ngoing on the sites,
which are located within the 44 m. corridor. Revealed are large
ecropolises, tumuli, settlement-sites of the feudal epoch, numerous
artifacts. Excavations are conducted by the rchaeological Research
Centre of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia.

With the financial support from the Monuments Protection Foundation
of Georgia (under the patronage of Mr. B. Ivanishvili, Georgian
businessman) restoration of superb monuments of the Georgian architecture
– Khtsisi (1002) and Ekhvevi (turn of the 10th c. to 11th c.)
churches – is about to start (conservation architect T. Nemsadze).
The same Foundation has also initiated restoration of Dirbi church
murals, where works are already ongoing (conservation painters
M. Buchukuri, D. Gagoshidze). Restoration of other significant
sites is also planned.
 
 
2003-07-20
For one year already, with the financial support
from the Monuments Protection Foundation of Georgia (under the
patronage of Mr. B. Ivanishvili, Georgian businessman) restoration
works in Sh. Rustaveli State Academic Theatre are ongoing. On
the ground floor of the theatre, revealed are unique samples of
the 20th c. Georgian art – murals of the café Kimerioni, which
were executed by the great Georgian painters Sh. Kikodze, D. Kakabadze,
L. Gudiashvili, as well as works by Sudeikin and unknown Italian
painter. Poetic inscriptions left by the Russian and Georgian
poets in 1920s are also revealed. Up to now, significant part
of the murals was covered by the plaster. After the works are
finished Tbilisi will be enriched with one more significant site.

Initiatives of the rural community involvement in the restoration
of the local monuments are more and more increasing. 13th c. “Midelaant
Kvashveti” church in Karchokhi gorge (tributary to Ksani gorge)
might appear among the list of such sites.
